Abstract
Comparisons, whilst odious, can be revealing. The cost of health care in a number of countries, roughly comparable to our own, shows an awareness of a looming crisis. This has been building as the demographic contour of age, and expectation of professional intervention, has evolved. Britain shares the problem of mainland Europe's social costs, which also afflicts the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia, Italy and France. Like us, these countries grew health systems in more socialist, less populated times, when we died younger, had fewer care options and lower expectations.
