Abstract

An experimental and analytical study has been performed to investigate the freezing characteristics of aqueous binary solution. Ethylene glycol solutions of 5, 10, 30, 40, and 50 wt% in concentration were utilized as the testing solutions and the experiments were carried out for various initial and cooling temperatures. The effects of concentration and cooling temperature on the frozen layer of the solutions formed on a horizontal plate were extensively examined. It was found that the frozen layer became mushy dendritic ice layer except for the cases of both high concentration and quite quick or slow freezing and that the analytical results were in good agreement with the experimental ones for the dendritic ice layer.
