Abstract

AbstractThe Freedom Charter is the most significant document in the long struggle for justice in South Africa. Its adoption at a Congress of the People on 26 June 1955 in Kliptown near Johannesburg was a continuation of earlier resistance. But the Freedom Charter also marked a new phase in the struggle. For the first time, people of all races were actively involved in formulating their own vision of an alternative society for South Africa. Through a long process of discussion and debate, the people of South Africa, led by the African National Congress, formulated this FREEDOM CHARTER.
