Abstract

In this paper the simulation of a free ring together with a passive scalar has been performed. The axisymmetric simulation has shown that the pseudo-steady solution is obtained when a single functional relationship between ω = ω θ /r and the Stokes streamfunction is achieved. The relationship is linear around the centre of the ring and the slope depends on the initial vorticity distribution. The passive scalar does not correlate with ω θ and correlates well with ω. In the 3D case the simulation has shown completely different distributions between passive scalar and vorticity field. The passive scalar tends to be concentrated in regions with low vorticity and low rate of strain. This is a further proof that flow visualisations can be misleading when conclusions on the vorticity field are withdrawn from markers.
