Abstract

This paper presents the derivation of the equation of motion governing the response of a thin-walled pretwisted beam under axial loading. The equations, taking into account the coupling effect of torsional and longitudinal vibration and the deformation due to the axial loading, are derived by means of the principle of virtual work. Characteristic values of the coupled torsional and longitudinal vibration of the pretwisted cantilever beams having rectangular section are obtained under axial tensile loading. It is shown that the pretwist and the axial force have considerable influence on the torsional vibration.
