Abstract
Abstract Free-use fuelwood supplies in two national forests in New Mexico will be exhausted within the decade if current trends continue. Alternative scenarios of energy prices, use rates, and supplies were used to determine the time span of inventory exhaustion on each of five national forests in the state. The energy obtained from free-use fuelwood harvesting was then compared to the energy expended in gathering the fuelwood. From an energy perspective only, free-use wood yields little energy return over costs when wood is burned in fireplaces. Heat-efficient stoves yielded nearly four times the net energy of fireplaces for the state as a whole.
