Abstract

In experimental cataract, free radical status of iridociliary complex and of aqueous humor has been studied along with the effect of local application of the direct ionol antioxidant. Experimental cataract was induced by introduction of diquat-dibromide into the vitreous body. The development of cataract was accompanied by POL activation and sharp depression of antioxidant protection with spontaneous normalization of all biochemical indices by the 14-th experimental day. POL activation in the aqueous humor was observed over the whole experimental period, but antioxidant enzymes were not revealed with the techniques applied. Local application of ionol resulted in POL slowing-down in the aqueous humor, which indicates pathogenic tendency of its action in cataract.
