Abstract

Background-low back pain is a common health issue, with which patient presents to a clinician and is a common cause of disability. More than 12 weeks of low back pain comes in the category of chronic pain.research states that low back pain can be related to anxiety and depressionAim-to assess the presence and severity of depression and anxiety in the patients presenting with chronic low back acheMethodology-Thirty patients of more than 18 years of age, of both sexes visiting the out patient department of orthopaedics in tertiary care hospital were included.Their demographic data were collected. All patients were subjected to visual analog scale, Hamilton-A Scale, Hamilton-D scale to measure pain intensity,anxiety level and depression severity respectively.scores of scales were compared.statistical data were analysed.Results-among the data collected,70% were females and 30% were males.vas score and ham-a , ham-d scores showed posiive correlation with each other,while there was no relation seen with age of patient and anxiety &/or depression severityConclusion-we concluded that pain severity is directly propotional to anxiety and depression. depression and anxiety severity were found to be directly propotional to each other. We suggests that patient presenting with symptom of low back pain should simultaneously be treated for anxiety and depression alongwith orthopaedic treatment for better outcome
