Abstract

When the coupled Earth-Moon system is considered rather than a closed terrestrial system (the Earth's atmosphere, ocean, inner and outer cores, and mantle), an eigenfrequency of free oscillations of the Earth is transformed into an eigenfrequency of the Earth-Moon system, making it possible to understand the increase in the Chandler period in a natural way. The eigenmodes of the coupled Earth-Moon system are determined by solving a linear, homogeneous set of equations with two degrees of freedom.
