Abstract

The online publishing debate continues, with online publishing companies looking into ways to placate the Public Library of Science advocacy group. The company argues that the US$500 publication fee is merely another version of the hidden publication costs that authors already experience, for example, for colour plates and page charges. In a bid to help authors from regions with limited research budgets there could be selective waiving of fees. Academic funding agencies and the Public Library of Science advocacy group consider this a viable way to cover publication costs. KP
