Abstract

Rates of free convection mass transfer at horizontal cylinders with active ends were measured by the electrochemical technique. Variables studied were cylinder diameter, aspect ratio and physical properties of the solution. The data were correlated for 2.3 × 10 8 < SC.Gr < 1.7 × 10 11 by the equation Sh = 0.32( Sc.Gr) 0.28 . The characteristic length used in calculating Sh and Gr was obtained by dividing the surface area of the cylinder by the perimeter of the cylinder projected onto a horizontal surface. An agreement was found between the measured rate of mass transfer and that predicted by adding the rate of mass transfer at the flat ends to that at the cylindrical part.
