Abstract

2 studies examined the sorting behavior of 5-, 8-, and 11-year-old Ss as a function of stimulus uncertainty, dimensional structure, and component attributes of stimulus sets. Difficulty in sorting and in shifting criteria is inversely related to age. While all Ss show pronounced attribute preferences, the preferences have a more restrictive effect on the younger Ss. Neither uncertainty nor structure affect frequency of sorting or of shifting. The consequences of these findings for concept attainment are discussed.
