Abstract

Summary Stomatal movements induced by light are regulated by ion and metabolite translocation and by modification of cell metabolism. The changes in free amino acids induced by light were investigated in different tissues in Commelina communis . Epidermis and mesophyll tissues were separated, and protoplasts of guard cells and mesophyll cells were isolated. Light induced no modification of the total free amino acid level in epidermis and guard cell protoplasts, but increased the levels in mesophyll and mesophyll cell protoplasts. The amino acid composition was modified in light. The similarity between both types of protoplasts and tissues is discussed.
