Abstract

This workshop was first suggested by the rockburst sub-committee of the CIM and the organizing committee of the 6th ISRM Congress. Stan Bharti of Falconbridge and Will Bawden of Noranda approached me with the request to organize a one-day workshop as part of the 6th ISRM International Rock Mechanics Congress, held in Montreal August 30 to September 3, 1987. We thought the timing of the meeting was appropriate because it was five years since the 1st International Symposium on Rockbursts and Seismicity in Mines, held in Johannesburg, South Africa. In addition, we felt that this type of workshop would generate ideas which could be developed further at the 6th ISRM Congress and the 2nd International Symposium on Rockbursts and Seismicity in Mines, to be held at the University of Minnesota, June 1988.
