Abstract

The background events to the installation of the Archibald Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park, Sydney, bequeathed to the city by 'Bulletin' editor J.F. Archibald are discussed, as also the selection of French sculptor Francois Sicard to design and sculpt the fountain. Details of the earlier professional expertise of Sicard are presented, highlighting that his selection was based on Archibald's love for French architecture and also his wish to stimulate Australian cultural and artistic production through Sicard's work.
