Popular songwriter Frank Loesser (1910-69) portrayed himself as an intelligent lowbrow. He had, however, a complex love-hate attitude toward classical music. His family background reveals the source of a negative identity that helped form this attitude, which influenced both his personal life and the Broadway musicals he wrote.
