Abstract

Gloria Niemeyer Francke, ASHP’s first chief executive officer, was recognized for her outstanding contribution to international pharmacy during an award ceremony on August 27 at the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) meeting in Brazil. Francke received the André Bédat Award, FIP’s highest honor for pharmaceutical practice. She was the 11th recipient of the biennial award, named for the 1978–86 FIP president, and only the second woman selected for the honor. Francke’s contributions to international pharmacy started in 1953 when she attended her first FIP meeting. She presented the paper “The American Society of Hospital Pharmacists: Its Role in the Advancement of Hospital Pharmacy in the United States” during a session convened by the Hospital Pharmacy Section of the Board of Pharmaceutical Practice. “There were very few women at that time” involved in FIP activities, she said. As Francke traveled the globe to attend the FIP meeting each year with rare exception, she said, she “was always meeting up with women pharmacists from other countries.”
