Abstract

The proposed contribution is part of a wide-ranging research project which proposes a historical-educational reconstruction of the activities of the Liceo-Ginnasio “Francesca Capece” in Maglie, an institute founded by the will and legacy of the Maglie Duchess of the same name, whose intentions and decisions have reached us through the testimony of Alessandro De Donno who, who, in his Memoirs on the origin and events of the “Pio Istituto scolastico Capece di Maglie”, reconstructed the dynamics and events that led to the foundation of the Institute, initially through the Society of Jesus and subsequently to the municipal authorities of Maglie. The birth of the Institute was sanctioned by Royal Decree no. 2094 of 20 January 1851 which authorised ‘the establishment of a Jesuit House in the municipality of Maglie for the education and instruction of youth’ (Royal Decree of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies no. 2094 of 20 January 1851).
