Abstract

France's National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) has released the first evaluation of its recent modernisation campaign, announced in June 1989. One facet of the initiative is directed at increased collaboration and cooperation with industry. The government agency ANVAR (the National Association for the Exploitation of Research) Targets small and medium enterprises for aid in transferring technology (and even scientists) from government labs such as the CNRS and CEA. However, the CNRS itself has a major commitment in this field; according to Francois Kourilsky, CNRS director general, 14% of the total CNRS annual budget for research (roughly FF 10 billion in 1990) is allotted to collaborative projects with industry.
