Abstract

Claude Allègre lost his position as French minister for education and research in a cabinet reshuffle last month after a series of bitter disputes with researchers and teachers over his propos“als for reform. His ministry has been split in two with Roger-Gérard Schwartzenberg, a lawyer by training, becoming minister for research and former culture minister Jack Lang as minister for education. Both new ministers have spoken of wanting to “[use] dialogue, listen, and understand”, an obvious attempt to distance themselves from Allègre's combative style. Ex-prime minister Laurent Fabius becomes minister for finance and industry.
