Abstract

This chapter frames Nordic noir as a theoretical concept. Just as with the classic concept of noir, Nordic noir relate to both literature (serialised crime novels) and film, in addition to high-end television drama. The shift from film to television comes with a number of challenges in terms of themes, narrative structure and aesthetics. Relating Nordic noir within the genre theory of film noir helps clarify how to understand Nordic noir as a critical concept, while theories about serial drama shed light on the new traits Nordic noir has brought to the general field of noir.
