Abstract

The constant failure in the production of good results by local councils in Cameroon has led to deteriorating and devastating effects to the lives of Cameroonians in such a way that if nothing is done to avert it, it will lead to egregious inconveniences to the population and why not increase poverty rate which could end up reducing the population of Cameroon to sufferings as a result of inability to meet with their needs. This has led some legal pundits to aphorise that socio-economic development under the Cameroonian law is a myth and not reality. During this research which entailed the usage of theoretical and empirical methods in collecting data, it was discovered that, the raison d’etre of low performance by local councils in socio-economic development in Cameroon, is due to the fact that, there has been inadequate measures as well as ineffective Implementation of the laws regulating the on effective decentralisation of administrative and financial autonomy owing to the fact that there exist several challenges and difficulties in the Implementation of these laws. In this respect however, many responses have been envisaged by the Cameroonian government aimed at arriving at a solution. But it is rather unfortunate that the so many International and national legal instruments available are either not apt enough or not effectively implemented to resolve this problem. If nothing is done to the present status quo, no long-lasting solution will ever be attained. It is in this same strand of reasoning that some recommendations aimed at covering the Loopholes at all levels have been arrived at.
