Abstract

Abstract The entire world has recognized a need for the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction and established GHG reduction target to resolve this problem. To achieve this, each country is currently implementing policies for the dissemination of new and renewable energy (NRE). In order to effectively spread the NRE system at a national level, it is required to analyze the potential of the NRE system. However, there is still a lack of the analytical study on the potential of ground source heat pump (GSHP) system in South Korea. Therefore, this study aims to develop the framework for the analysis of the potential of GSHP system in elementary school facility, which was conducted as follows: (i) data collection; (ii) estimation of the heat exchange of the ground heat exchanger (GHE); and (iii) estimation of the efficiency of the GSHP system. The results are as follows. First, the average of annual amount of heat exchange of the GHE of 27 elementary school facilities located in Songpa-gu was estimated at 378,383 KWh (Maximum: 977,409 kWh (school ‘22’) and minimum: 78,792 kWh (school ‘27’)). Second, the efficiency of the GSHP system of 27 elementary school facilities was estimated at average 4.04 (Maximum: 4.44 (school ‘27’) and minimum: 3.73 (school ‘15’)). This study can help decision makers (i.e., elementary school facility manger or policymaker) establish the energy supply and demand strategy by GSHP system.
