Abstract

Control system of a computer numerical control (CNC) machine has provisions to estimate machining parameters of a tailor made job. The machining parameter settings supposed to set aiming on the target machining effectiveness and efficiency, quality and martial to be machined. The CNC machine’s control system generated machining parameter settings for a tailor made machining job do not guarantee the optimum machining performance. This is mostly evident in electro discharge machining (EDM) which involves several control factors. Aforementioned necessitates a methodology for computing optimum machining parameter settings based on the target machining performance. This manuscript provides a mathematical framework for computing machine parameter settings. It has been developed employing the engineering robust design approach (ERDA). The manuscript also illustrates a case study explaining the use of the mathematical framework for computing machining parameter settings using an EDM application.
