Abstract

A brownfield site is a deserted site that remained underutilized from old industrial sites; most of those sites are located at the core of urban areas as a legacy of industrialization. Brownfield redevelopment definition appeared in the 1990s as a new term to accommodate urban development activities by providing an opportunity for restraining urban sprawl. In Egypt, there is no definition for these sites to identify or evaluate them by location, social needs, economic trends or environmental challenges. Moreover, there are various sites in Egypt that dealt with investment standpoint with no proper framework to deal with such unused gaps and their impotent locations at cities' centers. This paper aims to support local municipalities, urban planners and other stakeholders with the capabilities to identify and evaluate redevelopment potentials of brownfield sites. By using the case study of Ramses zone in Cairo, Egypt. Two frameworks have been developed; one for identifying potential brownfield sites while the other was for evaluating them. These frameworks have the potential to be applied to other sites in various contexts. Those frameworks achieve sustainable development for cities by providing decision support for brownfield redevelopment as a strategic process.
