Abstract

High-speed liquid crystal shutters are used to view a television or computer display screen on which left and right eye views of a three-dimensional scene or object are displayed alternately in rapid succession. The shutters are synchronized with the displayed images, using optical signals from the screen, so that the left eye sees only the left image and the right eye sees only the right image, the observer perceiving a fully coloured 3D picture. In the television system the transmitted video signal is a composite of signals derived from two synchronized cameras mounted side by side.
