Abstract

A simple explanation of the phenomena observed when relativistic heavy ions are fragmented upon colliding with a variety of target nuclei is developed. Explanations are provided for the approximately isotropic angular distribution of each fragment type, for the small momentum and energy transfer to the projectile nucleus, for the independence of the branching ratio with respect to the target nucleus and for the approximate energy independence.
