Abstract
Dominant trends of fracture traces in the northwestern part of the folded Appalachians are unaffected by local folding or faulting. Rather the dominant trend changes direction so as to maintain a constant angle (52°) with the regional structural trend. It is concluded that in areas of strong folding, fracture traces and the vertical joint zones they represent are related to regional structural trends rather than to local structures.
