Abstract

This research work presents the comparison of fracture toughness of composites with multi fillers used with GFRP. The natural bio fillers like coconut shell particulate and tamarind seed particulate are used in epoxy. Fillers are added to the epoxy material with fiber filler ratio of 100:1.The laminates was fabricated using GFRP/epoxy filled with bio-filler adopting conventional hand lay-up process. Various combinations of epoxy based bio-filler composites are investigated and their fracture toughness is calculated. The result indicates that the conventional Glass/epoxy laminates perform better than the other composition using bio fillers. The performance of GFRP/epoxy laminates using bio fillers are in the decreasing order of glass/epoxy composite with 1% coconut shell particulate, Glass/epoxy composite with 0.5%coconut shell particulate + 0.5% tamarind seed particulate and Glass/epoxy composite with 1% tamarind particulate . The maximum load and the corresponding deflection of the specimens are evaluated; the critical energy release rate, critical loads and the corresponding displacements are discussed to observe the suitable composition for fracture toughness.
