Abstract

The unstable Bennett's type of fracture of the base of the fifth metacarpal must be recognised and treated. Adequate reduction and maintenance of position by transverse fixation with a Kirschner wire is recommended. In the unrecognised case, in which healing occurs with proximal displacement of the fifth metacarpal shaft impinging on the carpo-metacarpal joint, reconstruction by arthroplasty or fusion may be necessary.
