Abstract

The cause of the failure of the concerned milling cutter is attributed to rough grinding of the surface of a chip space which resulted in local hardening of the surface layer and in additional stresses in the place of maximum shearing stresses from outside load. Stress concentration and, to a much lower degree, presence of grinding marks caused initiation of the fracture.
