Abstract

AbstractCellular ceramics constitute a class of materials where the properties may be optimized against the weight. These materials may be potentially useful in both structural and non-structural applications. In order to broaden the utilization of the currently- available materials, the mechanical properties must be improved. The objective of this paper is to review several recent studies on the strength and toughness of open cell brittle materials. The work was aimed at understanding the mechanisms involved in the failure of these materials and the relationship between the properties and the microstructure.
