Abstract

A lesson on fractions, using colored pencils and grid paper, can be both enjoyable and a good mind-stretcher for students' conceptualization of fractions. You can introduce the lesson with a discussion of checkerboards, flags that have rectangular subdivisions, or tiled floors or walls, asking such questions as What fraction of the checkerboard is red? What fraction of all the tiles are green? or What fraction of the French flag is white?
