Abstract
The eigenmodes of canonical unstable resonators have been observed to display fractal character. In this paper, we derive an explicit formula that expresses the absolute fractal dimension in terms of the mode eigenvalue and the geometric parameters of the cavity. Numerical measurements of the fractal dimension for a set of 25 modes in a typical cavity are shown to be in good agreement with the prediction.
