In this paper, the author draws attention to the fact that cognitive processes have been a hidden and underdeveloped aspect of the psychoanalytic theory of the mind. This is an unfortunate situation both from a clinical viewpoint and in relation to the recent attempts at integrating psychoanalytical insights with findings in cognitive neuroscience. A relatively unknown contribution to the necessary updating of the psychoanalytic theory of thinking is represented by the Chilean psychoanalyst Ignacio Matte-Blanco. The Freudian roots of Matte-Blanco's model of the mind are pointed at, especially the topographical unconscious and the primary processes. Matte-Blanco's model of the mind, which is informed by mathematical logic, is then described in its essential aspects.
