Abstract

In this paper, we present implementation of an infinite impulse response (IIR) adaptive filter with particle swarm optimization (PSO) on field programmable gate array (FPGA). Particle swarm optimization performs a structured randomized search of an unknown parameter space by manipulating a population of parameter estimates to converge on a suitable solution. And this technique is independent of the adaptive filter structure and is capable of converging on the global solution for multimodal optimization problems, which makes it especially useful for optimizing IIR and nonlinear adaptive filters. This paper describes the PSO algorithm and presents a circuit architecture that facilitates efficient FPGA implementations. The results of the synthesis and the function simulation in the active HDL platform demonstrate the successful hardware implementation of the IIR filter with the PSO algorithm using FPGA.
