Abstract

In this work, the fuzzy logic based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is presented to determine the maximum operating point of the solar photovoltaic (SPV) module. The main advantage of fuzzy logic lies on the fact that there is no need of any mathematical model hence any complex system can be controlled and also it has a unique power to handle the systems with nonlinearities and uncertainties. By using the proposed technique the value of duty ratio is automatically adjusted depending upon the environmental condition thus helps to enhance the tracking speed and efficiency of the system. The proposed fuzzy based MPPT algorithm is modelled and simulated in Matlab/Simulink software using a 37 W SPV module and a DC-DC boost converter. To determine the effectiveness of the proposed system, fuzzy logic controller (FLC) has been designed and implemented on a Xilinx Spartan 6 FPGA board using very high-speed hardware description language (VHDL) language. The experimentation has been carried out under different environmental conditions. Results obtained from the simulation and experimentation validate that the proposed MPPT technique gives the pleasing performance with good compromise between the obtained and the expected values.
