Abstract

Faulty clinical laboratory results Despite the high quality performance of numerous clinical laboratories, laboratory errors still exert negative effects on patient outcome. Many pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical variables which are frequently beyond the control of the laboratory, can influence the final results. Most of the identifiable errors can be traced in the pre-analytical phase: incorrect patient identification, inadequate phlebotomy technique, improper sample handling. During the analytical phase, assay interference can have a considerable effect on the results, but may remain difficult to identify. Inaccuracy of reference values can constitute an important post-analytical problem causing an incorrect interpretation of the laboratory data
