Abstract
A histological and spectroscopic study on carotid plaques was performed. Based on the analysis of band shape of important groups like amides, their convolution and their reciprocal intensity ratio, we were able to draw a map of the distribution of intima, homogeneous, dishomogeneous and ulcerated parts of the plaque and to characterise various components (cholesterol etc.). When present, the nature of the thrombus was clarified.
