Abstract

Abstract A four-dimensional (4D) simulation in ( x, y, z, t ) of a free electron laser (FEL) has been developed for the case where the electron beam radius is small compared to the optical mode radius. The simulation uses the electron pendulum equation and the parabolic wave equation including the effects of diffraction and short pulse propagation. In the CEBAF IR FEL, the short electron pulse reduces gain, and the narrow electron beam can cause distortion of the optical mode. These important effects are studied simultaneously using the 4D simulations.
