Abstract

An efficient system for characterization of nonlinear parameter in a highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) is demonstrated by using four wave mixing (FWM) techniques, namely, varying pump and signal wavelengths and varying the pump while keeping the wavelength constant, which to our knowledge is the first of its kind to be reported. Among the FWM techniques, keeping the signal constant and varying the pump wavelength technique is the best method with 1% error compared to the manufacturer’s datasheet values (e.g the dispersion slope at 1550 nm of 0.007 ps.nm−2km−1, zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) of 1531 nm and nonlinear coefficient of 10.7 W−1km−1).
