Abstract

In this paper, comparative study of two schemes of four-quadrant GTO converter-fed DC motor drive is carried out. The schemes considered are (i) a PWM GTO dual converter and (ii) a single PWM GTO converter with a static reversing switch. Both of them offer superior performances compared to conventional line commutated converter-fed DC motor drives. The performances of the two schemes are compared for the case of both open-loop and closed-loop speed control systems. The results are experimentally verified in the laboratory with a 3-hp DC motor.
