My youngest brother, anthony, a publisher, once told me that he had ignored all the older-brother advice I gave him except for two maxims. the first—“all women are ladies unless they prove themselves other wise”— sounds pompous. the second I hand on: “Never be caught waiting anywhere without something to read.”
