Performance ImprovementVolume 39, Issue 10 p. 31-38 Article Four architectures of instruction Ruth Colvin Clark, Ruth Colvin Clark Ruth Clark received her doctorate in instructional psychology and educational technology in 1989 from the University of Southern California. After serving as a training manager for several years in the information technology division of a large utility, she has devoted the last 10 years to building a small instructional systems design seminar company that offers training and certification for government and business organizations in needs assessment, design and development of classroom and computer-based training, and cognitive methods of instruction. Among her client base are technology firms including Intel, Cisco Systems, and Microsoft. Her instructional design methodology, based on an integration of the work of Robert Horn and David Merrill, is serving as one of the models for Cisco Systems' metatagging of knowledge objects. Ruth has published two books, Developing Technical Training and Building Expertise, which was awarded Outstanding Instructional Communication from ISPI in 2000. Ruth is a past president of ISPI and a regular presenter at the ISPI annual conference. Her current focus is on job analysis and training programs for knowledge workers, whose accomplishments rely on explicit and tacit knowledge built over a number of years of professional experience.
