Abstract

Application of Touch screen technology in the flight deck is being reexamined currently by the OEMs with the maturity in technology evolution and increase in user community enthusiasm due to advent of touch screen tablet devices. This consumer driven technology brought demand for effective human machine interfaces and challenges associated with application of this technology in flight deck. This paper reviews existing human performance models to predict selection times with soft keyboard and provides a foundation to evaluate which models can used to measure specifically selection times associated with data entry through soft keyboard in the flight deck. This paper provides a framework for my research on evaluating the human computer interaction issues associated with soft keyboard in the flight deck.
