Abstract

The origin of photocounts in vacuum detectors of optical radiation is studied. It is shown that the reason of photocounts is the Coulomb instability of a weak electron flow in a detector. A scheme for the detection of optical signals based on the use of electrons bound in ions or atoms rather than free electrons and capable of working without photocounts is proposed.
