Abstract

The nursing shortage, continuous substantive changes in health care organizations, and technological advances in the health care system highlight the importance of ethical competence in nursing, and healthcare. The shortage of nurses is compounded when today's practicing nurse experiences the moral distress associated with being unable to practice in congruence with the nursing code of ethics and standards of practice. Education of today's healthcare professionals must be responsive to a workplace dominated by the brisk pace of change, developing technology, the demand for efficiency and cost effectiveness, and the growth of information. This healthcare environment mandates examination of how nursing curricula foster sound ethical decision-making.
