Abstract

Fossil, OR Gerald Wagoner (bio) Nothing here that's not America. A yard full of busted cars. Sun-baked. Swallowed in high grass.House and outbuildings worn grey. The last Dime Store clerkwonders if everyone's dreamsare empty as the barren barns where local farmers stack sacksof clouds against dread of droughtbeside the feed and seed. The red, white, & blue Essosign, missing panels and tubes, advertises hopes gone dry. In winter's single digit nights, when stars are sharp as glass, distant coyotes yip and howl. The sleepless attempt to recallthe names of young peoplewho leave each year in June. [End Page 95] Gerald Wagoner gerald wagoner's childhood was divided between Eastern Oregon and Montana where he was raised under the doctrine of benign neglect.
