Abstract

Forward scattering measurements of periodic meta-materials are investigated. A sum rule for forward scattering is derived using the optical theorem and analytic properties of Herglotz functions. It shows that the absorbed and scattered power over all wavelengths from a periodic metamaterial is related to the static polarizability per unit cell. The theoretical results are verified by a parallel plate waveguide measurement setup.
