Abstract

The action of electron temperature fluctuations on the dispersion characteristics of longitudinal waves generated in the cathode region of low-current thermionic cathode argon discharges is studied theoretically. The numerical solution of the linearised hydrodynamic equations for ions, plasma electrons and beam electrons showed that both forward and backward waves can be generated in such discharges. The mechanism of forward-wave generation is connected with the interaction between the plasma and the slow electron beam. There is a good agreement between the theoretical and experimentally measured dispersion characteristics.
